When Grayson and I decided to purchase our first home we were encouraged to invest in a home warranty contract. The fact that the house was over 15 years old and thus, the appliances were as equally old, we agreed and decided to purchase a home warranty.
Best.Decision.Ever! Our pipes burst last winter thanks to a random cold freeze. No problem, we just called AHS.
After returning from our vacation we learned that our dishwasher was broken. No problem, we just called AHS. (To be fair, not really "no problem", it is sort of a bother to hand wash dishes, but technically the term "dish washer" can also refer to a person who washes dishes in either a restaurant, hotel or private setting.)

Then, our air conditioning unit went out a few days ago, but again no problem, we just called AHS. Embarrasingly enough, we could have avoided this call had we only checked our filter system. Oops, no one told us to change the hidden filter near the furnace though! Thankfully the repair man was very nice and didn't make us feel silly for this slight mistake. He actually helped us clean our units while he was there.
All this to say, purchasing our home warranty was a good decision and if you ever find yourself in a similar situation, I would highly recommend getting one!
