During the engagement process couples can become so consumed with details, planning and everything else that goes along w/ having a wedding that they forget to truly prepare for the marriage. We understood this concept when we got engaged and chose to focus the majority of our attention preparing for the life-long commitment we were about to make. We attended 5 pre-marital counseling sessions, we took personality tests and then processed our relationship to death. Even still, with all that preparation we couldn't even begin to be truly prepared for the challenge of becoming one flesh.
When God created the universe He looked around him each day and saw all that He had made and said "it is good". All except when he saw that man was alone. The Lord actually said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." (Gen. 2:18) God created man for companionship, God created the woman to be the man's helpmate. God intended for this man to one day "leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh." (Gen. 2:24) But what does that mean? One flesh?
I've studied alot about marriage and no where have I found the perfect solution to this challenge of joining 2 people into 1. Mathematically it doesn't add up and yet somehow when you get married you are supposed to take 2 completely different people and become 1 flesh. The emotional and physical stuff we get, but the spiritual part is what has us crying out to the Lord for help. Grayson and I both had personal relationships w/ Jesus Christ prior to our marriage and now we are trying to learn how we will meld that into a unified front. We love the idea that "a cord of 3 strands is not easily broken" and we are desperately seeking to strengthen our cord while learning all the time that it isn't easy to do.
This new challenge is good for us. It is bringing humbleness and forcing us to be utterly reliant on Christ for our guidance. Faith truly is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we currently don't see.
