Umbrella Etiquette?

This will be a quick post that requires feedback from the audience. In the South lately we've had some rain and this rain has caused me to ponder my umbrella etiquette. I'm not discussing umbrella use in general, rather the etiquette that should be administered when getting into your car while it is still raining.

I obviously do not know this etiquette because it never fails that:

1) I end up getting soaked in the process
2) so does the whole inside of my car door and
3) everything on my floor board that happens to fall underneath the dripping wet umbrella I'm slinging inside the vehicle.

I'm sure I look like a moron when engaged in this ritual which is why I feel the need to ask for help in doing this in a proper fashion. My current method is to keep my umbrella open, get into the car, then close the door as much as possible and then at the very last minute close my umbrella and try to get it into the car while closing the door at the same time. I once learned in college that The definition of Insanity is doing the same thing over and over, but expecting different results.

When it comes to umbrella etiquette people, I feel like I'm going insane!

If you get a better answer, be sure to let me know- I do the same thing. I learned that definition too, but it never applies to ourselves, right? ; )
