Australia ... continent or country?

This morning's calendar question for the male was, "In what country was Keith Urban born?"

Obviously, with the response of "Canada" from Grayson I knew I would be winning today's points. After hearing this response I felt certain that mine would be correct (Australia). Isn't that what you would have guessed too? Apparently, he and I were both wrong! Keith Urban was born in New Zealand. That is really a moot point though because I got my answer correct and am only losing by ten points now. The real issue is the prompting of a ten minute geography discussion between Grayson and myself.

Neither of us were sure of many things. For instance, is Australia a continent? We were both fairly positive it is one of the seven. The next question, isn't Australia a country because during the Olympics the newscasters kept reporting that Sydney was the capital of Australia? Is it possible for a country to also be a continent? (After my research, apparently it is). The last question that had us baffled was whether or not New Zealand is a country in Australia or a city. Well, we were wrong on both counts. New Zealand is actually a country of its own to the south of Australia.

Hmmm ... that's food for thought. I'm just glad that Grayson didn't say Australia b/c I probably would have given him the point thinking New Zealand fell within the borders of Australia. I just felt the need to start off my day enlightening the rest of you to geographic information (or giving insight into our poor geography skills!)
